Whittier Greenway Trail Oak Station

Whittier, California

Gruen Associates served as the landscape architect for Oak Station, a new trailhead on the Whittier Greenway Trail near Lambert Road in the City of Whittier. The site offers a 22-space parking lot, bioswale and drainage features for sustainable water management, a rest stop for trail users with a drinking fountain, seating, drought-tolerant landscaping, safety lighting, decorative security fencing, and street improvements to ensure a safe and accessible connection from the current terminus of the Whittier Greenway Trail to the Mills Trailhead.

The rest station and small plaza at this location also function as an interpretive site, showcasing elements of Whittier’s history, growth, and development. This area includes interpretive exhibits, custom-designed bike racks, and inspirational quotes etched in the pavement from poet John Greenleaf Whittier, the city’s namesake.
