Held at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort in South Lake Tahoe, the audience of architects and masonry block producers learned of the LEED Silver certified maintenance complex designed and constructed to support new light rail transit (LRT) lines and trains requiring service on the 18-acre site near LAX. Southwestern Yard’s Main Building is composed of durable, cost-effective, textured concrete masonry units (CMU), metal panels and aluminum-framed windows –all balancing design with engineering functionality while kinetic energy evokes direction, velocity and movement through color, pattern and texture changes over distances. Additional CMU structures and their unique program work together as a unified design that reinforces connectivity, function, and allows for sustainable, safe maintenance of LRT commuter rails for the public.
The 2022 CMACN/AIACA Concrete Masonry Design Awards were co-sponsored by the Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada and AIA California.
Congratulations to the Project Team!
