At this year’s Net Zero Conference, Gruen Associates Partner Debra Gerod, FAIA, LEED AP moderated a panel discussion titled “Powering Progress: The Role of Utilities in Achieving Net Zero” at the Los Angeles Convention Center on October 1, 2025. The 12th annual conference brought together climate leaders to share ideas and explore practical approaches to building a more sustainable future. The panel was comprised of representatives from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Southern California Edison, and the County of Los Angeles Internal Services Department–all invested in furthering discussions about new initiatives and strategies to make Net Zero a reality at a utility scale. Panelists examined how these public agencies are taking measures to enhance their operations, infrastructure, and customer relations to deliver reliable, affordable, and decarbonized energy. Debra, an architect and long-time champion of sustainability, guided the discussion with thoughtful questions and steady insight, helping connect the technical challenges of utility operations with the broader goals of design and environmental responsibility. It was another meaningful opportunity for Gruen Associates to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on collaboration, innovation, and a more sustainable future.
